📝 Summary

<aside> 💡 The first Design Project of the semester brought a new and interesting challenge to my group. My group and I were tasked with designing an Ostomy pouch for our patient, Ms. Tahani. As an individual who has an active lifestyle, Ms. Tahani is faced with the issue of constant readjustment through the means of her Ostomy pouch, causing it to fall off on a number of embarrassing occasions. Ultimately, hindering her quality of life by getting in the way of doing simple tasks. My group and I needed to design a solution that will enable Ms. Tahani to adjust her ostomy pouch while keeping the coupling between the flange and pouch strong to prevent it from deteriorating.

🦾 Design Process

Week 1

Milestone 0 & 1

Week 1 marked new beginnings and experiences with the first-ever design project. For Milestone 0, my group and I were allotted time to familiarize ourselves with each other through introductions, this is where we determined that I would be the coordinator for this project. Then we immediately got to work with Milestone 1, my group was given our patient and her profile to begin identifying the objectives and constraints of our project. As well as, to create a need statement, outlining our problem and what we need to address with our designed solution.

Week 2

Milestone 2 (Individual Preliminary Research)

Milestone 2 introduced individual milestones, where we would do our own preliminary research in order to come together during the design studio’s to put our ideas together in order to create our ultimate prototype.

My part consisted of researching the device and user interaction, and finding ways in which the device is able to fit the needs and wants of the patient at hand. Furthermore, there is an estimated prototype drawing that accounts for the comfort of the patient.

Milestone 2 (Team)

During the second design studio, we kicked it off with milestone 2 where we brought all our preliminary research together to ponder prototypes. In this meeting, I was able to further understand our material selection towards our patient’s needs. We all discussed our excellent ideas with open minds, we found that some aspects of our ideas did not work and were able to work past that. However, as we pieced our ideas together and started to form visual ideas for our prototype, we always ended up encountering the same problem and flaw in our design. We listed out our pros and cons and decided to let our creative minds think about novel solutions that would address our cons, and come back together the next week.

Week 3

Milestone 3

For our last official documented milestone of the project, we needed to finalize our low fidelity prototype. Form and function, fabrication and assembly, and device/user interaction were further synthesized to fit our patients needs. Furthermore, we needed to understand our material selection and its effect on our patient. This week allowed us to work together as a team, understanding each others opinions and working towards a greater objective.
